Sexual harassment or playful humour?

Funny Barbados News BlogBARBADOS IS A SMALL society – too small in many cases! We have grown up in a society where the boys in the neighborhood would "eyeball" the girls of their choice and hiss at them as they pass. In some cases, especially to impress their friends, they would pass comments with adjectives such as "sexy" and even openly make suggestive statements about what they would like to do with the female. Some females are flattered by this and would smile and even allow playful touches, while others would be offended and totally ignore the offender. So, what do we mean by sexual harassment? According to the Barbados Draft Bill on Sexual Harassment in the workplace, it is defined as follows:
"A person shall be taken to harass sexually another person if the first-mentioned person makes an unwelcome sexual advancement, or an unwelcome request for sexual favours, to the other person, or engages in other unwelcome conduct of a sexual nature in relation to the other person."
In organisations, the behaviour referred to in this article manifests itself in various other ways, such as "rough jokes" with sexual undertones; terms of endearment such as sweetheart, dear and honey; emails that either openly or subtly refer to sexual activities or websites; touching individuals inappropriately, either subtly or openly; suggestive actions; openly suggesting what you would like to do to, or with, the other individual. Err... unwelcomed? So if the a boss tell a woman to give he de flossy and he will give her a raise.. and she welcomes the thought, it is all fine and dandy. But this put men in a real bind now boy, cuz bajan men does like to 'try a ting'... if it work, sweet! If not... well, they usually try a thing again and again and again. But when yuh say A, yuh gotta say B... WOMEN does want to show up at work wearing a long belt dat dem calling a skirt, and a blouse with 2 of the top buttons missing and the 3rd one begging for mercy. How is a man supposed to work in those horrific conditions? That time most of his blood is being redirected from his productive brain to his re-productive pelvic area, and everytime the woman open the bottom drawer of the filing cabinent, he pitching tent. But it is so entrenched in Bajan nature that it is difficult to tell what is sexual harassment and what isn't. Especially since we pride ourselves on using sly and ambiguous statments... If a chubby woman come in my office and suddenly i start singing "..I like dem big! and fat! and thick!", am I sexually harassing her? Purely co-incidence... unless something gine happen.. :D. What about outside the office... informal staff lunches? That mean you can't tell a joke now, cuz all bajan jokes, somewhere down the line, gotta be of a sexual nature. But you can't please everybody, i bet you some people vex cuz dem AIN'T getting sexually harassed... lowers their confidence and self esteem.. Why he only want to squeeze her butt?? Mine aint sexy?! hmph! But women does provoke de same men when it is convenient for them... if dem want a drop home, all a sudden dem batting dem eye lids and dropping pencils.

*After reading this post, 832 bajans will attempt to use the word Harassment in a sentence. "Lisa left for college this weekend. A lot of guys were very sad, since HAR-ASS-MENT a LOT to them."
