Proxy awards an unwelcomed surprise
Yet again organisers planning things fuh years and aint telling a soul. Of course the public accustomed to seeing the students collect their own hard earned trophies, but instead, dem seeing some old big belly headteachers, who probably only run when dem got diarrhea, collecting the awards. You cuh imagine that you work so hard for years to compete at this level, won your event, then some person who don't even know your name, or does probably beat you wid a leather strap, skinning dem mout and collecting your goodies? If de shot put champion did launch a iron ball at somebody head, yuh woulda hear how dah's bad. Nuhbody knew what was going on... the spectators, the parents, the athletes, nobody. I guess it was the teachers' and officials' little secret... as the races done, we gine JUCK dem... bwahhaahahahaha. Seriously though, this makes absolutely no sense. That's like watching Justin Gatlin win at the olympics with a sub 10 second run, and then seeing Bush take the victory lap on the behalf of America... then after running 50 metres, Bush starts wheezing and palpitating and has to be removed from the stadium by Air Force One. Oh well, at least there will be a secretive prize giving ceremony on March 30th which is by invitation only. I hope dem serving refreshments.. cause you KNOW the licorish white mout bajans gine come expecting food... nuh fish cakes neither... FOOD!"NO RESPECT for the athletes!" "The children earned their trophies, not the principals."
Those were just two of the remarks from angry parents and spectators in the VIP Stand, who berated and booed officials for starting the closing ceremony of yesterday's Barbados Secondary Schools Athletics Championships (BSASC) at the National Stadium without the athletes present. What angered some patrons even more was that the principals were then asked to receive the prizes and trophies on behalf of the athletes and their schools. ... "They're the children's trophies, they earned them and the principals shouldn't be receiving them."
But chairman of BSASC Catherine Jordan said a decision had been taken in advance to shorten the ceremony and only hand out a selected amount of prizes, but it was not communicated to the spectators. "We had discussed that the closing ceremony was too long and we took a decision since last year to abbreviate the programme and only give the champion prizes," she said. She said an awards ceremony was planned for March 30 at Manor Lodge and invitations would be sent to the athletes, coaches and parents.
