No cotton pickers

This year's cotton crop is expected to produce about 200,000 pounds of seed cotton but growers are concerned about a lack of pickers. Chairman of the Cotton Growers Association, Oliver Agard, says although production this year is expected to be just below that of 2005, the average yield per acre will definitely be higher. There was a 31 percent decrease in the acreage planted this year with 316 acres cultivate compared to 462 in 2005.... The cotton harvest is just past the half way stage but the growers are concerned about a shortage of reapers. They are appealing for an additional 500 workers to pick the remainder of the crop. Growers are paying $1.50 per pound of seed cotton, and say there is money to be made. They are encouraging those who may be unemployed, along with organisations like youth groups, clubs and others involved in fund raising activities, to consider cotton picking as a means of earning money. According to the growers, this is one way that they can help themselves, the cotton industry and the Barbadian economy as a whole.Source: CBC Channel 8

The concept of a POUND of fluffy cotton just stretches the imagination. What does a pound of soft puffy cotton really look like? Money to be made boy... 200,000 pounds of the white stuff at $1.50/lb! That's like $300,000 man... niiiice. So why isn't anyone biting? Probably scarred from watching all those violent cartoons and hearing Yosemite Sam calling Bugs Bunny a "cotton picking" varmint... just not something you would brag about to your kids is it? Maybe they should glamourize the industry a bit. You know, have some cotton pickers in a really sexy and provocative advert... some women wearing cotton shirts, no bra and on a rainy day. How about a guy driving a red convertible with nuff cotton in the back blowing 'bout, don't mind he skin peeling off cuz it was burnt by the sun and he face greasy like a fishcake. Wait a minute.. why not do like Pizza Man Doc? Have some sheep brained people PAY to pick the cotton, and whoever picks the most gets to try out for the Guiness Book of World Records! Of course during the actual record breaking attempt, they will have the 'privilege' of picking the cotton for FREE. How kind. :) Don't worry, if dem can't find no Bajans, a certain group of people gine end up picking de cotton for $0.50 a pound... tsk tsk tsk.
