Beckles: Governments must support tertiary education
Well, I dont think it should be a case where you make poor people pay, simply screen the appliCANTS more efficiently. As I mentioned some time ago... ask somebody what they want to do when they leave school... oh, i want to go UWI. What you going to study? Oh, I dont know. Or they go and choose some rediculous major like Philosophy or History, and end up working for a sandwich shop making roast beef subs, where the most enlightening question they could ask is "Do you want onions on that?". And don't talk about BCC.... lets face it, they go for practically free (free for them anyway), skip classes, play basketball, change subjects, play basketball, drop out, play basketball, lime, play basketball, and end up attempting about 200 courses over a 10 year span with a grade point average of zilch. But all this time, helpless tax payers pulling money out to pay for their dismal academic performance... thing is, their basketball skills suck too! So you want free education? Write a 500 page essay about why you will not lag and waste tax payers money, plus, agree to wear this T-Shirt saying "My education is NOT free and I thank all TAX PAYERS for this privilege. I also agree that all my teeth should be kicked down my throat anytime I skip a class or play basketball excessively."Barbados and other Caribbean governments need to continue to fund tertiary education completely. This is the view of principal of the UWI Cave Hill, Professor Hilary Beckles. He says a lack of financing is preventing many working class people in the region from accessing tertiary education. Professor Beckles used the Mona campus in Jamaica as an example, saying students there are asked to pay 20 percent of their tuition. That is about 10 thousand u-s dollars - a requirement he says is very hard on some people. Source: CBC Evening News
*After reading this post, 323 students will earn a degree in Science... only to have any findings they come up with struck down by local government. Then they will go to the US and make millions of dollars talking about global warming.
