Bajans urged: Care more for disabled
It's an unfair world man... but what about the plight of able persons in society? We just don't know what to call them anymore. First they were handicapped, then disabled, then differently abled... next thing they will want to be referred to as super-fit-acrobatic-normally-able. And what about trying to assist them? How many times have you done the right thing and given up your seat to bring some polite relief to a standing pregnant lady... only to get curse by a hard mout big belly bastress. It's a dangerous game. People complain about persons parking in the disabled spots... what about disabled or elderly persons parking in the abled spots? One time I went to Super Centre and this woman who looked like she was 98 took it upon her self to LEAVE OUT the flashy, convenient and well paved senior citizen parking spot, to park in the closest space available for able bodied persons... Come on man, I wanted that spot! Is there no protection for me? I might be abled bodied, but I am also hampered by a condition called "laziness" which is just as crippling. I agree though, we need to make Barbados more 'disabled' friendly. Ramps on the buses, beeping sounds at the traffic lights, but sometimes we go too far... Braille at a DRIVE through ATM? What's that about?A CLERIC has called for more care and respect to be given to disabled people in Barbados.....
"Sometimes we have people who abandon people and they do not care for them anymore. I think that we need persons . . . who do not abandon people when they are physically challenged. I think the tendency in our society here in Barbados is to abandon people," he said. The cleric told the congregation at the Bay Street, St Michael cathedral there was still a need to be more friendly in the way how people handled and responded to the disabled, and there was also a need to modify buildings to give them greater access.Source:
