Patrick Won the Gold Cup with Sharp Impact

Funny Barbados News BlogTHE BULLY was tamed at the Garrison yesterday.
The occasion was the 25th running of the Sandy Lane Barbados Gold Cup, and the question uppermost in the minds of the thousands of race fans at the track was whether any of owner Gay Smith's trio of horses could beat last year's winner and favourite, Feet On Flames, nicknamed the "Garrison Bully" by his adoring supporters.
It was Sharp Impact, confidently and expertly ridden by Barbadian ace jockey Pat Husbands, who put the bully in his place with a sizzling front-running performance.
The win was Husbands' second in the premier event, after his victory on Vardar in 1990. Source: www.nationnews.com
Is it me or is Horse Racing in Barbados just not what it used to be? Man I remember when Bentom, and Sandford Price used to lick up the place. Last time I really heard any big roar was when a Bajan horse Incitatus won in 1997. But maybe this whole thing about alcohol being promoted at events has something to it... i mean when it used be the Cockspur Gold Cup, it used to be ram off with loyal Old Gold supporters leaving their usual rumshop posts to come out, drink a swig and talk hard. Now it is the preppy "Sandy Lane" gold cup.. well excuse me... the name seems to have brought a certain exclusivity to the event. This year, not one foreign entrant was in the big race. I guess nobody ain't interested no more. Back in the day, if a big shot said "I'm going to the Garisson", every body would assume he was going to watch a race. These days, those words would put him in the same category as Bill Clinton. I think that just sucks! No pun intended.. what am I saying.. of course it was intended.
