Workshops explain labour laws

Funny Barbados News BlogGOVERNMENT'S Labour Department says it is seeing an increase in the number of employers and employees who are calling or visiting that department for information on pertinent labour legislation. That is the observation of Victor Felix, senior labour officer, who said some of the main concerns reaching his office involved termination of employment and the rights and entitlements of workers in those circumstances. "We get issues ranging from entitlements to vacation pay, or average pay. They also ask about any other benefits and issues related to severance pay," he said.... These workshops focus on the Holiday with Pay Act, the Shops Act, the Protection of Wages Act and the Employment of Women (Maternity Leave Act), among many other critical labour laws. Well boy, getting educated about the labour laws is like being hung like a horse and having a face like one... you have the power, just can't use it. Sure you can go and hear what the employer can and can't do, or rather, is SUPPOSED to do... but it's similar to listening to a workshop about children's rights... still aint got stop yuh mudda from pitching a hard slap cross yuh face when you get she vex. But this is just nuff talk, Barbados too small... de boss man gine tell you to work from 6 til 6 , 6 days a week (3 sixes boy.. de devil!) and you gine complain and mention labour laws. Of course you can, it's within your 'rights'... then your hours will be changed to come in at 8 and leave at 4, but when you come in at 8:01 AM.. a verbal warning for being late... when you get stuck in traffic buying a $10 food, a written warning for consistent lunch hour tardiness... you know what coming next already. As you open you mout, all de sweets tek way and yuh getting juck all bout. Of course you know de bajan attitude.. if you dont like working hey, leff, ship out! Cause i can't see NO bajan small business employer keeping on staff that complain fuh dem... man dem gine find SOMETHING to fire you for. Breathing too hard on the phone, perfume too strong for staff, not putting the word "Good" before "Morning" when greeting customers, peeing on the toilet seat. What's next? I can't use the company car to car a young ting down Miami Beach now? schupes!

*After reading this post, 82 persons will complain about having to work overtime in an understaffed environment.. 2 more staff will be fired and they will be left carrying Jacuzzi's up the 3 flights of stairs. Wait you want laws or you want money?
