BMA head: Too many holidays
Not working twice as hard? Well the tourists who pay weekend rates aren't sleeping twice as sweet, but getting charge premium rates. You don't raise the pay of staff during the winter season, but you raise the room rates. Can't get rid of the holidays tho... how we gine get time to crowd the beaches, barbeque some burgers and drink nuff ju-c... or pack a car full uh we friends then drive like brainless chickens through the country hoping to run off the road and make the front page? To tell you the truth, the are a lot of holidays, and sometimes you just know that you don't have to work on Monday, but ain't got a clue what the holiday is.... and even if you do know, you aint know the meaning. What the heck is Labour day? More importantly, who cares? Next thing dem gine call for Sunday to be a normal day for work, and reqeust that we do ACTUAL work on Fridays, instead of telling jokes while watching the clock, reading dirty emails and calling friends to plan the weekend. Seriously tho.. have you ever called and tried to setup a meeting on a Thursday... they always skip along and setup the appointment for the next Monday or Tuesday.. like the Friday doesn't exist. I'm sorry sir, Mr. Jones has gone to lunch... please check back next week.HOLIDAYS are fine for relaxing but they are a headache for some employers. President of the Barbados Manufacturers Association (BMA), Peter Miller, said on Wednesday that the holidays "will have a deleterious impact on productivity" because "you lose production (and) exacerbate the other problems you have in the industry". ...The hotelier, who runs Peach And Quiet Hotel in Inch Marlow, Christ Church, was commenting on the listing of one public holiday every week between April 14 (Good Friday) and May 1 (Labour Day).... Calculating that these holidays were costing the hotel industry "millions of dollars", Loveridge said: "I think it's unreasonable to have to pay time-and-a half or double time on so many public holidays." He said workers being paid double were not necessarily working twice as hard and their companies were certainly not charging twice as much for services. Over the past weekend, hotel industry workers would have had three holidays/special days (including Easter Sunday) with premium rates of pay, said industrial relations officer with the Barbados Employers Confederation (BEC), Sandra Cadogan.
