Fisherfolk biding their time
Calaloo gine be we national dish just now, and we gine gotta give T&T a "bj" for rights to put a flying fish on bajan dollar coins, in this Tri-Island republic of Trinidad, Tobago and Bimbados. Wait a minute.. we already PAYING T&T to save dese same dollar coins in the BarTrini nonNational Bank (BNB)... yet still it is a problem for us to fish off the Tobagan coast in a place which THEY don't even fish! Ahm, anybody got a pliers? I trying to take T&T's finger out my eye. Big thing when this started 2 years ago, people cussing, getting on bad, wucking up and pelting pee bombs... now that clear fishing & teritorial boundary lines are drawn out, bajans frighten to even swim out too far off the miami beach, before a current pull them out and their drowned, blue, fish bitten body ends up before the Trini law courts. Yet still dem gine down every year for carnival, drinking SupligenT&T like pipe water and blasting "Sweet Sweet T&T" on the radio. I wouldn't be surprised to hear that the same fishermen dat get hold, imprisoned and fined for fishing in supposedly T&T waters, agreed to bring back a few barrels of T&T products to put on bajan supermarket shelves, including some of the same flying fish boned and packaged in Trinidad... licking so much pooch dem mout does smell like a pit toilet and does gotta end up using baby wipes and harpic pon dem tongue to get rid of the taste.Local fisher folk are not jumping and waving at the news as yet despite the fact that Barbados' government is regarding it as a victory. Sean Farrell visited the Bridgetown port today and spoke to fishermen and vendors about the developments. In February 2004 relations between Barbados and Trinidad and Tobago soured over the fishing dispute after Barbadian fishemen had their catches confiscated and fishermen arrested. And even though authorities are saying that the rulings allow fishermen to ply their trade in waters to the south of the island some are still skeptical. They say they will need to know exactly what the boundaries are before they enter Trinidadian waters. According to the fisherfolk, since the two countries still have much to talk about they are awaiting the outcome of further talks. But other fisherfolk say problems with fishing are being experienced in other territories and are hoping a conclusion on the Trinidadian matter will lead to a general Caricom position on fishing in the region.... With this matter still to be settled, the fishermen wont be making a mad rush into the waters off Trinidad and Tobago...anytime soon.Source: Barbados CBC Channel 8
