Cable & Wireless to Cut as Many as 3,000 U.K. Jobs

Cable & Wireless Plc, Britain's second-biggest phone company, plans to cut as many as 3,000 jobs in the U.K. over the next five years, reducing its workforce in the country by about half amid increased competition.... The company, whose cable lines once connected the British empire, has failed to fend off competition in traditional phone services from rivals including Thus Plc. Shares of Cable & Wireless have fallen 93 percent in the past six years, as total losses reached 13 billion pounds from late 2000 to early 2004.
