Respect language!

Too many Barbadians do not respect our country or our mother tongue, the English language. We spoil beautiful Barbados by renaming it "Bah-ba-dus". We also blemish the English language by careless pronunciation. Here are some examples: ka-munity - community; puh-cent - percent;....What makes it almost incredible is that some very prominent persons in our society are the main offenders, and because of their positions and regular public pronouncements, their speech sounds worse than the ordinary man's. Dah's true? wuh lemme teyya :D! I tend to agree, while I find it extremely disturbing when a Bajan does not know the English translation to something said in Bajan or even the correct pronunciation to an English word. I once saw a person write "ants the man left, she was on phone"... (English translation of "Ants" is "As Soon As"). While that has its place, you should always know the English equivalent to your Bajan. Speaking Bajan or mispronouncing English words in a rumshop is fine, but speaking officially to the public.. no boh. The thing is that we Bajans speak quickly, so we don't have the time to pronounce the whole word... "So f d man en feel like pruh-nouncing de word at de time, wuh leh de man do wuh he want tuh do" :D
